Enterprise Level LIMS – Reaping the Benefits of Integration
Dave Champagne, Vice President and General Manager, Informatics, Thermo Fisher Scientific
With drug development times of approximately 15 years and subsequent costs approaching $2 billion by 2010, pharmaceutical companies are increasingly in search of processes that can help them consistently deliver a return on investment during the patent life of a drug. Enterprise level laboratory information management systems (LIMS) are key contributors in this effort. Delivering advanced functionality that is specific to each stage of the drug development process, sophisticated, purpose-built LIMS streamline processes and costs and present organizations with unique integration opportunities. These LIMS provide superior capabilities by delivering real-time analysis and reports, facilitating regulatory compliance and product quality, integrating with the company’s broader network and providing secure access to key data throughout the organization.

LIMS Integration for Hydrocarbon Processing and LNG Plants
By Kevin Smith, director of sales, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Colin Thurston, director of product strategy, process industries, informatics, Thermo Fisher Scientific.
The Natural Gas Market Review 2008 published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasted that global demand for natural gas will continue to grow at a fast pace, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) exhibiting a dramatic increase of output1. The latest Oil Market Report of IEA, published in August 2008, reveals that global oil product demand for 2008 was 86.9 mb/d (+0.9% versus 2007) and is expected to reach 87.8 mb/d in 2009 (+1.1% versus 2008)2. The upstream stages of exploration and characterization of oil and gas play a crucial role towards timely production, allowing for global petrochemical companies to address increasing demand.
This article discusses the challenges facing the oil and gas processing industry and stresses the necessity for LIMS deployment. It also details the main benefits resulting from LIMS integration in the oil and gas exploration and characterization stages and provides a real-life application example to further demonstrate the benefits.

Elevating the Role of Laboratory Informatics to Assist Mission Critical Decision Making in the Enterprise
By Kim Shah, VP Marketing & Business Development, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Informatics
One of the key challenges faced by life science organizations today is the inability to turn the vast amount of laboratory data generated into useful information that enables management at all levels of the organization to make timely and informed decisions. Many companies still use manual processes for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data; they also use both structured and unstructured content. A worldwide market research study on laboratory information management system (LIMS) users conducted by Strategic Directions International (Los Angeles, Calif.) determined that over 70% of laboratories have less than half of their instruments interfaced with a LIMS.

SaaS - Is a web hosted LIMS right for your laboratory?
What is a Web Hosted (SaaS) LIMS & is it right
for your lab? Simply put,
a web hosted or SaaS LIMS is a (Laboratory Information Management
System) that is a licensed, web hosted subscription that is paid for
on a low monthly or annual fee basis as opposed to a customer,
on-site installed, lump sum license purchase. The LIMS exists on a provider’s
server instead of at your lab or business, and users access it through the
web. So why would this benefit your
lab?

Using Document control software to comply with ISO requirements
The objective of a document control software system is to make sure that good manufacturing methods are recorded and improved on. ISO standards require that the process and the documentation directing the manufacturing methods, and any changes to them, are restricted to authorised personnel with any changes recorded for future examination. Therefore ISO certified organisations are required to have a system for controlling the changes to their documents.

The Gap Between LIMS Capabilities and Environmental Monitoring Needs
While laboratory tests are an important part of Environmental Monitoring (EM) operations, the EM workflow is complex and the EM workplace presents a unique set of challenges. Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) LIMS products bring a wide range of functions to help automate the analytical laboratory, but struggle to meet the unique challenges of the EM operation.
This paper reviews the workflow typically found in EM operations to identify the needs of the EM organization. It matches the capabilities of commercial LIMS to these needs, and discusses the LIMS customizations that would be required to close these gaps. It also discusses two alternative approaches to building an interface between an EM-specific product, such as MODA-EM, and a commercial LIMS.

Justifying a LIMS for your Small Water/Wastewater Laboratory
A currently popular and well-known definition of insanity is the repetition of the same behavior with the expectation of different results. Moreover, it is a key principle of laboratories that processes be repeatable with predictable results. Why is it, then, that many small water/wastewater or environmental labs continue to labor using paper and pencil and, at best, Excel spreadsheets for information management and yet expect to magically meet or exceed regulatory standards including NELAC/NELAP (TNI) and 21 CFR 11, increase efficiency, handle instrument calibration and maintenance (never mind results files!), generate all reports and trend analyses quickly and distribute them effectively, and interface with outside systems when it has ALWAYS been a struggle?

TWiT.tv!
Welcome to TWiT.tv! If you've stumbled upon this page and are wondering what it's all about, read on.
The TWiT.tv Story
It all started in 1998 with a small cable network called ZDTV, a channel dedicated to covering computers, the Internet, and personal technology. The people behind this site all worked on that network as hosts, reporters, or producers.
In 2004, ZDTV, then called TechTV, was sold and dismantled. Former TechTV hosts, Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, and John C. Dvorak, and producers Robert Heron, David Prager, and Roger Chang went on to other jobs, but we stayed in touch, with each other, and with fans of the late TechTV. Those fans told us again and again how important TechTV had been in their lives, and how much they missed the channel. We missed working with each other, too.
On a rainy evening in January, 2005 a few of of us got together for dinner after spending the day covering MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. Leo, who was working as a radio host, happened to have a microphone and recorder. He turned it on and recorded 20 minutes of idle chatter about the Expo and the tech world in general. He posted that recording on his web site. Within a few days tens of thousands of people had downloaded the recording. TechTV fans began clamoring for more. A few months later, TWiT was born.

XML Reporting in SQL*LIMS
For several years my boss, Brian, has been telling me that the perfect solution for a LIMS Certificate of Analysis report would use a solid data extraction algorithm and a flexible XML output. The idea has always sounded interesting to me, except for the fact that the SQL*LIMS product doesn’t include the technology to do such a thing…until now. Today’s article describes how to customize SQL*LIMS and Oracle Reports to send data to XML, and how to convert that XML output to PDF.

Diet LIMS for Small Labs
“Small is beautiful” is a popular quote. But did you know that being small in business is double jeopardy? Of course, most of us know. Being small in the laboratory business is no different. There is always threat from the large competing labs. The larger labs constantly push their smaller rivals with velocities sufficient enough to drive them out from the realms of profitability and eventually, even beyond the threshold of existence.
